Doctrine: The Channel 4 Interview
by Michael Maas

Doctrine: The Channel 4 News Interview is a short film by Michael Maas, created with a group of people who take turns churning out one short film a month, learning about the process and having fun along the way. This group is sometimes called Hidden Alien Productions, or Some Sorta Video Club. This is Maas's first foray into video; he is also a singer/songwriter/piano player.

UAS Halloween Videos

Intro Teaser (DVD Menu)
A little something I put together for a Halloween compilation DVD.

Team Computing Montage
No video exists for the first annual UAS Halloween costume competition. Until now, that is.

Play

The BattleBots
In 2001, Computing Services decided on a BattleBots theme and paraded around campus on Halloween drumming up support for their department. Since I wasn't competing in this year's costume contest (having no idea how to best my previous year's entry), I was asked to tag along for a little bit and videotape some of the action. I was only able to gather 28 minutes worth of footage before the competition was over and the awards handed out. It was enough.

Men in Black
In the fall of 2002, the University of Alaska, Southeast Information Technology Services embarked upon a quest to win the third annual UAS Halloween contest.

This is their story.

(In video form!)

Pirates Teaser
In order to generate hype, a video teaser was created before the music video (below) and circulated around campus a couple weeks before the 2004 Halloween contest.

Pirates Music Video
For the increasingly popular UAS Halloween contest in 2003, the ITS department's theme was Pirates of the Caribbean. Once again, the computer center crew pulled out all the stops by turning cardboard, colorful rags, and duct tape (they always use duct tape) into period costumes and accessories. Once again, their efforts paid off as they won Best Group.

Play

Spam!
In order to promote the rollout of new anti-spam software (and to generally just annoy everyone on campus), ITS dressed up as e-mail spam in 2004.

This was the first year that the winning department's name was permanently engraved on a fancy Chancellor-commissioned plaque.

It was also the first year that ITS lost.

Willy Wonka
Oompa Loompas, all four Golden Ticket holders, Slugworth, and Willy himself. ITS pulled in a win for the best costume award...

The Lifetime Achievement Award

Ciriglianos Cast Photo

Cirigliano's Italian Restaurant
In 2006, IT Services decided not only to dress up the department like an old Italian restaurant, but also to have a spaghetti feed for anyone that happened to be passing by. More than 80 bowls of pasta were served, none of which contained lobster.

Yozhik's Memorial
On June 1st, 2006, our hedgehog, Yozhik, died of cancer. I thought that the best way to remember him would be to create a video out of the few photos and video clips we had.

This video has been moved.

Old Arbat Portrait
In July 2006, my wife and I took a trip to Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia. On our last day in Moscow, we went back to Old Arbat to have our portrait painted.

This video has been moved.

Post-ITS II
It's the beginning of the end (or is it the end of the beginning?) for the Post-IT Note mosaic in IT Services.

This video has been moved.

Post-ITS
While the cat's away, the mice shall play.

Michael Ciri, Director of Information Technology Services (DITS), happened to be in Orlando attending Educause when National Boss Day rolled around in October 2005. Our department chipped in to make him a little something before he got back.

The music, which was selected more for its tempo than its lyrical content, is by the inestimable Jonathan Coulton.

This video has been moved.

Sunrise over Machu Picchu
This is a 30-minute video I took with my laptop at the Portal of the Sun above Machu Picchu. It has been time-lapsed to 30-seconds or so and you can see the sunrise and its effects on the clouds. Very impressive footage, I think, and unfortunate that the mini-camera on my Sony Picturebook wasn't able to auto-adjust for the sunlight...

Watch the clounds in the lower right. And keep an eye out for the speeding bus!

Sunrise over Haleakala
Another sunrise in another part of the world. This time, I had the benefit of using an actual video camera, though I still used my Sony Picturebook write the images to its hard drive.

It's like watching a sunrise from an airplane.

Haleakala Clouds
Late in the afternoon, clouds flood into Maui's Haleakala Crater.

Apparently, at 9:30am, they just boil off.

Manta Rays
Via tourist word-of-mouth, Oksana and I discovered an amazing night dive off The Big Island in Hawaii. Even better, a videographer was on hand, underwater, to record the experience.

Cusco New Year's, 2002

Venezuela Music Video Intro
Way back when, I decided to try to make an animated ("active", as opposed to "hand-drawn") music video out of still images. Photos from my trip to Venezuela seemed perfect and I got right to work. This video is as far as I got, but every time I see it, I want to get back to editing -- but maybe in a program that handles motion better than Premiere 6 does.

This is in an unfinished state; you'll notice because I edited out parts of the music.

Craig's Chain Gang
In the summer of 2002, Rotary district 5010 sponsored a trail-buiding project for their Youth Exchange Program. Many high school exchange students from all over the world spent a day at UAS clearing a path, digging trenches, and spreading gravel to create the trail to the gazebo we have today.

I shot and edited this video in the span of 24 hours so that it could be shown at a Rotary meeting the very next day.
